A Monument of the Mind

My response to news about the Nineteenth Century Club:
(Memphis) To me, the Nineteenth Century Club is a monument not to a period of time, but to good citizenship. It is the birthplace of ideas that helped this city grow in strength and beauty, a monument of the mind. Its name is the name of a Club whose members have helped everyone living in Memphis even to this day. Who has not played in the parks of Memphis? This club created the Parks and Recreation system by organizing the first public playground. If each Memphian who ever enjoyed summers in the parks contributed ten dollars, the Nineteenth Century could have its repairs done in no time. This same group of forward thinking club members started City Beautiful campaign in 1930 which lasted through the fifties and sixties and produced results winning national acclaim and tourists for Memphis. This club also helped build hospitals and education associations. This building on Union could become a highlight on tours of the secret treasures in Memphis, like the lovely homes in the Historical District of New Orleans.  In some cities, the government would purchase the land and rent the building back back to the organization or owner in perpetuity (or at least 99 years) for $1.00 a year.  By eliminating the tax burden, the organization might be able to make the needed repairs.

Veterans Day, 2011

(November 11, 2011)  In Memphis, The Commercial Appeal daily newspaper reports ". . .the U.S. Senate,  . . . passed a bill on a 95-0 vote on Thursday that will help unemployed veterans. If approved by the U.S. House, the legislation will help some of the 240,000 jobless veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
The bill increases the tax credit for hiring disabled veterans to $9,600. It also would create new tax credits of up to $5,600 for employers hiring veterans who have been looking for work for at least half a year and $2,400 for employers who hire veterans out of work for four weeks or more."

Are there any disabled veterans seeking employment or veterans out of work for half a year, or  even four weeks, who want to help sell art or make a film in Memphis?   If so, call Art Promotions, 901 289-4939 starting Monday.   The pay is mostly commission only on the art, and back end pay in points on the films at this time.

The Beautiful Mississippi River

Preparations were underway Friday afternoon for the St. Judes Benefit Cycle Ride.  Numerous Bicycle shops from around Memphis had tents in Tom Lee Park as the cyclists gathered for the relay ride on this gorgeous day.  It is easy to access the park where spacious sidewalks make for easy riding  by going through the parking lot at the old Rivermont at Riverside and Georgia on to the path, rather than riding down Riverside itself which was blocked to car traffic due to the race.

Safer Streets for Cyclists was the Plea . . .

Safe Streets for Cyclists was the PleaExpressing Opinions

along with a Call for Cycle Lanes on Madison.  Excitement mounts two wheels in Memphis as the Green Line is being sewn together from Collierville, through to Germantown, to Shelby Farms near Cordova, all the way to Tillman.  Then a big blank exists until Cooper Street in Midtown.  Even with Madison cycle lanes from Cooper to Cleveland, a preferred route to the scenic riverside park paths along the Mississippi River and to the businesses and cafes along Main Street has yet to be determined.

Some wonder if the Mayor is getting the message about the opportunities safe bike lanes create for the city, such as reducing air pollution and drawing more cyclists to Memphis.
